I Do Not Have Even One Iota Of Sympathy For All Of The Americans Who Are "Suffering" And Being "Ripped Off"
61
I have traveled to the Wall Street section of New York City on four occasions, in order to MONITOR the “protest movement” that is taking place down there. And the most striking thing is the vast majority of the “protesters” are well-fed and over-fed white people who are obviously from middle-class backgrounds. There are relatively few blacks, Hispanics, Asians and others and there is only a very light sprinkling of individuals who appear to be homeless and/or down-and-out.
In other words, most of the ones down there are nothing but soft, spoiled, lazy and whiny punks and punkettes. As a matter of fact, and as far as I am concerned, hardly any of the folks down there deserve to be living in a great nation like the United States of America and it is a real shame and a crime that thousands of U.S. military personnel are currently fighting and dying to keep their types safe and secure.
I only wish them the worse and if it were up to me, I would send in a number of heavily-armed police units to kick them out of the area and to arrest all of the ones who put up resistance.
That mob is not accomplishing anything worthy. About the only things they are succeeding at doing is stinking up the area, strewing filthy garbage all over the place, disrupting the flow of vehicular traffic and making it difficult for hard-working people to get to their places of employment.
Interestingly, one of the primary reasons why I have such a dim view of the “protests” and “protesters” is I am black, grew up in poverty and have been discriminated against and “ripped off” by the power elite throughout my life. Opposite of what is the case for many, if not most, of the whites who are “protesting” in downtown Manhattan, times did not start getting tough for me a mere 10 or 12 years ago.
As is the case for the majority of black people in America, I was born into a recession and have lived in one for most of my life. Much of my biography consists of my being under-hired, not hired at all, passed over for promotions that I deserved to get, required to walk 10 miles to get to point A while whites were required to walk only one mile to get to that point, and the “last hired and first fired.”
So, no, I do not have any mercy at all for a bunch of white people who are just now getting around to becoming aware of such things as “life is not always fair,” “life is a bitch,” “one cannot get ahead by simply working 9-to-5,” and “only the strong survive.”
The following account is a very good example of what I have had to go through for much of my life:
Back in 1970 when I was in the U.S. Army and only about three months from being honorably discharged, I sent out my resume to a few companies in order to have a job waiting for me when I got home to Los Angeles. And if I must say so myself, my resume was quite impressive. While in the Army, I was awarded a number of awards for valor in combat and meritorious service; I commanded units that were comprised by as many as 400+ soldiers, I was a staff officer for the Commanding General of the 9th Infantry Division, and I advanced to the rank of captain.
Well, I received one response from a large Los Angeles-based life insurance company that indicated that I would be a “perfect fit” for one of its management-trainee programs that paid a very good salary. I spoke with a man over the phone and he assured me that as soon as I got of out of the Army, the job would be mine.
About three days after I was discharged and returned to Los Angeles, I went to the company to meet with the personnel officer and I will never forget what happened that day.
Decked out in a Brooks Brothers suit, I looked very much the up-and-coming corporate officer as I sat in the waiting room with about five young white men (I was the only “minority person” there). Then a tall white male entered the room, walked right past me to where the young whites were sitting and asked, “Which one of you is Julius Hannon?
Sir, I’m Julius Hannon,” I answered.
He quickly turned around and when he saw me, a surprised expression came over his face. He looked like he had just seen a ghost.
To make a long story short, when I went to the man’s office and sat down with him, no mention was made of the high-paying management-trainee position. He told me that the only job available to me was an entry-level claim examiner position.
I did not let on that I was shocked, disappointed or angry over the fact that I had just been discriminated against because of the color of my skin. I just said I would take the job and asked when could I start.
When I reported for work, I attended a training course and nearly all of my “peers” were kids fresh out of high school and junior college. In other words, I had been grossly under-hired, only because I was black.
However, my attitude was I will show them that they made the wrong move -- and I did exactly that. I worked my tail off. Every morning, I got to work about one or two hours early and every evening, I stayed about one or two hours late (all off the clock). I produced far more than any of the people that I had been hired with and even more than most of the “old timers” in the department.
In less than six months, I was promoted to supervisor, and about one year after that, I was promoted to manager of the entire department which had a staff of about 100 claim examiners.
Then, after I had been working for the company for about two years, I landed a second job, working from midnight to 8 a.m. as a security guard in the headquarters building of a large bank. And that was just the beginning. I went on to work two full-time jobs for nearly 30 years. I was an insurance executive by day and a security officer by night.
What I am driving at is, when I got “ripped off” by a huge corporation, I did not cry, I did not complain, and I did not have any ill feelings towards the company. I just put my nose to the stone and “accepted life on life’s terms.” In addition, as soon as I realized that I was not making enough money to achieve my material goals or to live as “high off the hog” as I desired, I got a second job. After all, I was young and strong and could handle the long hours.
The moral of this story is people who believe in such things as government is supposed to “create jobs” for them and big corporations and other employers are supposed to treat them fairly and kindly, and share their profits with them, are fools who are destined to fail and to live in despair.
Thus, instead of doing little more than squandering their time and making nuisances of themselves, all of the folks who are presently “protesting” on Wall Street and in other places should be out there “hustling” for themselves, just like I have always done. In fact, if they were out there working as hard as they can to get their own “pieces of the pie,” they would not even have the time to be concerned about big corporations making record profits and so forth.

Likewise i enjoyed your read an interesting point of view.
I am doing exactly the same crap you our doing. Retired from the Military and wondering where the hell our the leaders at. They scream team work and have no clue what that word even means. Discrimination beyond belief. After 20 years I wondered what country I was in. I missed a lot and no one to include the media even told me what was going on back home. Everyone had it coming yet I am powerless to do anything about it by myself. So if it takes a bunch of dumb lazy white kids to get this off the ground so be it.
Now Now! Brother feenix, like it or not those folk have the right to protest even if it accomplishes nothing so lo as they do it peacefully. It has come to Toronto this weekend thing is the TXE is closed on weekends.
Oh, Feenix.. while you are a wise man, I sense a bit of anger over discrimination. (I understand it on another level, I am blonde - our hair color makes us dumb you know lol)
As you can plainly see, I am "white as a ghost" and have sat in an office (back when I lived in Detroit) to get a job, simply scanning papers for a company. Being the only white girl, I was looked over, and I knew I would not get the job as companies have to hire "equally" Sure enough I did not get the job even though I was well dressed and the other women were in jeans and sweat shirts. (a corporate office) Despite I was fresh out of college, I could hear the girls talking and had no idea how to use a computer, or what "scanning documents" meant. I did not get the job.
My friend who was a store manager was told he had to hire at least "that token black" as everyone was white. He said to me, "How can I hire a black person when they don't apply for the job?" So, I went with him and we went and literally STOLE a nice young man (I hate using the race card) but he was a hard working black man who was cleaning while there was no customers. I said, "there's your man" (I usually picked his best workers and the ones to stay longest) He hired him and it was no mistake. A single father of 3 working 2 jobs as he was left with the children. He turned out to be one of the best workers, and sadly shot and killed by a jealous ex wife's boyfriend. Us, and the other workers were the only white people at his funeral. The church was packed. When his mother gained her composure weeks afterward, she came to the store to thank my friend who was the manager for giving him the job that paid the highest he could give him so he could quit one of the others and be with his children.
Lastly I'm wearing a wig in my photo :) my hair is blonde and about 5" past my waist. I live in a predominately black (I hate saying that!!!) neighborhood and stand out like a lightbulb, and have had so many people say "aren't you afraid to live there alone" I have to say "afraid of what, the crime rate in my town is zero look up the demographics!" The children who see me outside say "Hello Miss Kathy how are you?" They speak with respect. My town is small and everywhere I go, I am the minority. But I've yet (Since I moved away from Detroit) to feel discriminated against and live comfortably and fear free in my home. (And singly)
But please remember, blondes were held by the Romans as sex slaves, and we are discriminated against due to the whole 'dumb blonde' jokes and even one of my college professors told me in particular that when I applied for jobs to pull my hair back, let as little show as possible, and wear light colors so there is little contrast to my hair and skin. Sadly discrimination is everywhere, but I have friends I never refer to them as "my Jewish friend - Mexican - Chinese - Black" etc. I just refer to them as "my friend."
I'm starting my own company and would like to show you. I cannot break hubpages rules by posting it here. itsmekatATaolDOT if you'd like information, or just to see.
Thank you for fighting for our rights, and I am one who am sorry those rights are abused.. by anyone. My father fought for them too, but taught me use them wisely do not abuse, someday they could be gone.
A couple of lies I have always pondered. That the poor can blame themselves for being poor. The vast majority of people our poor and work their butts off. History shows that the vast majority has never been paid what they our worth. We forget the countless number of people who died and only by forming unions did they get paid enough to live. The second is the belief that reasonable people making decisions based on intelligence and wisdom will make the right decisions. I am amazed by millions of dollars in research where we ignore the truth because there is more money to be made by doing so, regardless of circumstance.
Again feenix - Useful, Awesome and Interesting. We are all the same color inside - red - like it or not. I also am 'gung-ho' on a good work ethic and I got more so from my 5+ years in the Navy only when I discharged I found Civilan life to be not as pleasant in the employment area. I thought with my 56 hour rotational shifts in a Communication Center with a Top Secret Security Clearance would get me a better chance with a job - but ended up going back to school(s) and taking courses - varied positions that actually paid a heck of a lot better than what I am earning now. I know the race thing is in a better place than what it was many years ago. Nevertheless, the employment situation has gone backward - there has been no hope. I thought Obama stood on the premise of Hope & Change for all of us. What happened? We got change all right. LOL. Your Hub is well-written and very expressive - I could visualize it.
Hi Feenix,
I hear where you are coming from.
Yes people may have their right to protest peacefully but it is not going to change anything so why do they bother.
Just like those I see on street corner with their signs asking for money because they are out work. How do they expect to find a job when they are standing on a corner all day?
Wow, another great Hub feenix, well said. I'm not sure how anyone could even begin to argue with your logic. You hit the nail on the head. You have to write a book one day, you have to.
Great points. Unfortunately, young, susceptible minds like these are the Marxist workshops, and they are the behind-the-scene puppet masters at work here.
feenix, A Up,Awesome and interesting hub. I disagree with the one fact that the fat white crap bags have a right to do what they are doing. At estimated costs of 80,000 dollars per day in costs they are a public nuisance, no?
The mayor has the right to set curfews for starters, and ticket books as well as the officers getting solid ID to back the fines of littering that should be garnered. I'm embarrassed by these dirt bags and if I had my way they'd all have a head bashing as soon as I could get enough troops in place to make sure none escaped, but hey that's just me, as a former Military Officer I know that your familiar with "ooda loop" strategy taught by Colonal John Boyd USAF. It may have been an airwing thang, Observe,Orient,Decide, and Act. I learned it different as a Marine Observe, Overreact, Destroy and Apologize, dust
THIS hub right here, is exactly WHY I am a huge fan of yours feenix!! YOU inspire the living daylights out of me! THAT is a pure example of living the American dream!! YOU went out and got it....YOU pursued happiness!
The government is not supposed to catch the happiness for us and GIVE it to us.
I salute you with every ounce of the respect I can muster.
Chris
To feenix: You have voiced my sentiments exactly. You went there and told the truth. Yes, we Black people have to better than average to get into the door. Black men have to be twice as good while Black women have to be four times as good because of the variables of race and gender. However, not to digress, I concur with you a milnillion percent that many people who contest are relatively well-off and are not hurting.
Sometimes when I hear such people protest, I wonder what if they were in a worst situation, they would commit suicide. Well, I wholeheartedly applaud you, sir. Keep up the good work. My advice: If people want the affluent lifestyle, plan, strategize, and work smart. Nothing is guaranteed to you. You have to contribute!
Feenix, as always your Hub is interesting my friend!
And as always I will say what I think… Even though I do try not to offend with an opposing view, age has enabled me to say my piece whether others like it or not... And you are a person who seems to be able to take another view without getting cranky. But, you can always push the delete button if you think I have gone too far… *Evil Grin*
Like you I am no stranger to hard work and multiple jobs and as a woman in her fifties and with a multi-racial family I have had my experience with discrimination. But that is where we part company.
I am tired of watching greed of the 1% percent, become an ever more devouring monster with a God Complex, which eats everything in its path and spits out the broken pieces. And I am trying like hell to understand the mindset of those who are coming across as mean, stingy, selfish and delusional to me.
Those who seem to think a Social Safety Net should be thrown away because a small percentage has misused it. Those who spit out the word Socialism at every opportunity without an inkling of an idea what the word actually means or can even give you an example of it in practice. Those who think the corporate world has a right to treat the worker as an expandable by product and then move on and do the same thing in the next, city, town or country, leaving behind devastation and broken people because they can make an even larger profit. And when you take a look at some of the profit lines in this supposed broken economy it has to make you stop and say WTF is going here?
As history has shown us that when there is no push for an equalizer the very fortunate, will live behind walls, with armed guards, employ people at slave wages, for long days, with no benefits and when they drop dead throw them away and hire another.
Now if you are willing to live with the “I have mine, the hell with you mindset” that is your prerogative. I hope you live long and prosper and I hope you will always have that lucky star, that follows some of us, with you and fate never leaves you begging on the ground for mercy or bread.
Maybe those “protesters” you call well-fed and over-fed white people who are obviously from middle-class backgrounds are just that. Maybe they are also people who just think it is time the corporate world gives the worker a fair shake and stops there every increasing effort to push us back into a dark dank history of slavery and serfdom.
Powerful stuff Feenix. I agree. They are not accomplishing anything and they ought to have their a**es kicked. People, have you heard the things they are asking for? They are full of s*** and if I was in New York, I would do it myself. Yes, our country is messed up. Yes, they can't get along. Yes, they spend to much. Yes, they do all the wrong. Even still, I support our government. If you don't "in this sense", you don't stand for America. Point blank. Everyone can cry and complain, but these are changing times. The same people that cry don't even vote. I am surprised that New Yorkers haven't ran them off. That is why they need to move Wall Street into Harlem. :) Great stuff though!
Very nice! I was especially impressed since this hub was the first of yours that I have read - You are very wise, and it shows.
I do agree with you in the aspect of your opinion of these so called "protesters." Yes, the right to protest is guaranteed, but change is not. Therefore, like many others have said, this protest is rather futile. A lot of the problem stems with the pride and ego of these protesters that don't have the humility to work jobs that don't pay a professional salary - and yes, I said jobs as in plural form. I like the way you put things: you must do what you must do. If what you must do is work two or three jobs in order to feed your family, then so be it - even if that means taking a job that requires you to say "would you like fries with that?"
In my opinion, I think the real protesters should be the people who are willing to go out and work as much as they need to in order to survive but aren't even given the first chance to prove themselves!
The people of color that need to be front liners can't get off from work ~ and the other half dropped out of care for any of our set laws and politics ...... they just do there thing to each other and make sure all gates out to the free world are locked , So we have Two worlds within one ~ protester Ha maybe new age Hippies ! .... Its hard to tell some one to change there world when other than unemployment rape an R&B music and One black Man that made it to the very top of the " who is crazy enough to take this sinking titanic over " ~ is all they really know about Yours.

i commend you for your service in our armed forces and all the hard work that you have done over the years. Now as i do not agree with all that the OWS protesters have done i do agree with there right to voice there opinion, there just doing it in all the wrong ways and if you really look into what is going on they are actually following the same people they complain about (kinda ironic). On that note a good work ethic and determination are both very good things but when the people in power are corrupt to the core and destroying our economy, the only thing working hard is going to do for you is if you were to produce your own goods. Because when there is no money to go around how do you purchase? Answer, you don't, bout the only thing you can do is trade and you need goods to do that. my opinion let your voice be heard but in a non-violent, honorable way.
