OWS Is A Failure Because The OWSers And Their Supporters Are Not Walking The Walk

Before I get into the meat of this article I will ask and answer a question.

Question: What are the primary objectives of the so-called Occupy Wall Street (OWS) Movement?

Answer: The primary objectives are (1) Bringing an end to the widening financial gap between the poor and the wealthy. (2) Stopping “corporate greed” by getting large corporations to do such things as become more “customer friendly,” release large portions of the billions-of-dollars they are hoarding for the purpose of investing that money into the provision of more jobs for Americans, and contribute large sums of money to education and helping the poor. (3) Ridding government of widespread corruption and wiping out the high degrees of influence that lobbyists have on politicians. (4) Generating measures that will dramatically lower the nation’s high rates of unemployment and poverty.

Well, the movement has been underway ever since September 17, 2011, and there are not even any miniscule signs that it is on the road to achieving its objectives. Many of the poor are still getting poorer and many of the wealthy are still getting wealthier. The huge corporations are still carrying on business as usual and doing such things as “down-sizing” instead of hiring more employees, shipping “American jobs” overseas, increasing interest rates on credit-card debts and charging higher fees for various kinds of bank accounts, and driving up the costs of necessities, including gasoline, heating oil and food.

Also, government is not overhauling itself and the lobbyists are still running amok among the politicians. Additionally, the high rate of unemployment is frozen in place and the number of families living near and below the poverty level is on the upswing with no relief in sight.

In summation, even though OWS has been going full throttle for over two months, Wall Street, the big corporations, government, the politicians and the big-time lobbyists have not changed any of their ways -- and the “little people” are still mired in the mud and slime of the same swamp that they have been trapped in for generations.

Thus, not only is OWS a failure, it is a miserable failure. The endeavor is nothing more than the squandering of time, energies and other valuable resources. It has accomplished absolutely nothing so far as reigning in Wall Street, the big corporations, bloated government, corrupt politicians and “overly-influential lobbyists.” And it has not even generated a sense of hope and optimism among the unemployed, under-employed and those who are living in abject poverty.

At the same time, however, there is something very interesting taking place in America, so far as making the nation a “better place.” While OWS is failing miserably when it comes to bringing about significant positive changes for “The American People,” the nation’s Christian community is succeeding at bringing about numerous improvements within U.S. society.

As an example, Catholics, Mormons and other Christians have stationed thousands of “missionaries” in impoverished communities all over the country. And those workers are delivering messages of strength, hope and faith to vast numbers of down-and-out people. In addition, they are teaching skills to the unskilled; tutoring school children and encouraging them to complete their educations; organizing and leading self-help projects to clean up unkempt neighborhoods; drawing youngsters away from street gangs and other criminal elements; providing marriage and family counseling; discouraging males and females from making babies out of wedlock; helping recently-released ex-convicts to re-enter society as productive law-abiding citizens; feeding and providing groceries to the hungry and malnourished; getting the homeless off the streets and setting them up with places in which to live; Catholic charities are treating and caring for more HIV-AIDS sufferers than any other organization in the country, and it would take an entire book for me to list all of the other things the Christian community is doing to help America become a “better place.”

What it all comes down to is Christians are succeeding because they are out there walking the walk -- and the OWSers and their supporters are failing because they are NOT out there walking the walking the walk.

Feenix, Yes, President Bush made funds available for drug care for the elderly and funds for christians to create 501c3's and other non-profits to aid the poor and needy where Government failed. Some might find that socialistic these days, but Bush did it. I think the report of the death of the OWS movement is premature. The movement will fail it's way to success, it will live before it dies.

Hey, junko,

Do you remember that old blues song, "Get Yo' Lie Straight"?

Just wondering, my brother. Just wondering.

What are you wondering my brother? I heard "you can knock a fool down with a hint, and he would get up and ask you , What you mean?" What did you mean about the blues song?

junko,

I will make this really easy.

You support OWS and I do not -- and that's that.

Two months is hardly a great deal of time to move mountains. Feenix, but you can rest assured that they shall be moved, all the same. All the points (objectives)which so you throughly brought here will be dealt with sooner rather than later

A vote up on behalf of your point of view

Good Hub Feenix,

Walking the walk is the name of the game.

No better chance to do that then right now.

To your continued success!

Cheers

Hey, Dex,

Thank you very much for the compliment and the vote. And I must say it one more time: I really do appreciate all of your support and encouragement.

Hello, Credence2,

First, thank you very much for the vote.

Second, I must ask, What are the mountains that must be moved?

As far as I am concerned, this is a swell country in which there is nothing standing in anyone's way when it comes to achieving the "American Dream" and to succeeding in life.

Hello, Sueswan,

Thank you very much for your compliment and the vote.

And based on my observations, there is no shortage of people who are out there crying and complaining over whatever they think is going wrong but a shortage of people who are out there walking the walk by extending a helping hand to others.

Hello, claptona,

Thank you very much for weighing in.

And, yes, it is time for a lot of people to stop doing so much talking and to start doing more "walking."

Talk is cheap, as they say.

Way to serve it up, feenix. :)

Great hub, my friend.

And, as usual, you have me in complete agreement.

You never talk cheap. You always say something worth listening to.

Hello, femmeflashpoint,

Thank you very much for the compliment.

And, oh, sometimes I talk "cheap." Just ask a couple of the very attractive waitresses at the local restaurant that I frequent.

But interestingly, none of them will ever accuse me of harassing them, because opposite of what is the case with Herman Cain, I am smooth, urbane and cosmopolitan. ;-)

My comments must not have taken. Christian groups do a lot of work WITH the poor, but seem unwilling to work FOR the poor.

Check out my hub "Social Service--Social Justice".

PS. Junko--way to 'sic him. Credence, you too.

TeaPartyCrasher,

You wrote, "...Christian groups do a lot of work WITH the poor, but seem unwilling to work FOR the poor..."

What in the hell does that mean? Are you talking about Christians are unwilling to work as maids and butlers for the poor, or something along that line?

And please, Credence2 and junko are no match for me. Like you, they are just a couple of lefties who are trapped in a time warp from the 1970's.

I resemble that remark, feenix, I'll take my time warp to all the GOP psychotalk here and now. You guys are not exactly batting a thousand right now, being virtually innudated, by your own admission with ineligible clowns, I wouldn't press my luck....

Credence2,

There you go again, putting words in my mouth.

Where in the hell did I say that the Republicans are "inundated ... with inelible clowns."

I mentioned only two "clowns." I did not say that the entire GOP field is comprised by "clowns."

And at least three of the Republican candidates can beat Obama, hands down.

Also, liberalism, or being progressive, as you like to call it, IS outdated. It went out with bell-bottom pants, platform shoes and Afros.

Feenix:

Read the hub I referenced. I don't see a lot of Christian Groups working for things like Living Minimum wages, etc. At least OWS sees that there's a need for some structural changes.

Also, if Liberalism is outdated, then so are Civil Rights. Women's Right's, Labor Rights. Or do want to live in an America of, by and for folks like the Koch's?

Finally, I think Credence has a point. The candidate that can best accomplish the GOP's goal, which has been their sole purpose since 2008, is way back in the polls. Behind a parade of people whos seem to be competing to be "The Great RIght Hope". . .

Hello, TeaPartyCrasher,

Your talking to me about what you consider to be the postive aspects of liberalism versus the negative aspects of conservatism is like talking to a brick wall.

I am far right and you are far left and the two of us will never arrive at common ground

And yes, liberalism is outdated and so are the Civil Rights Movement, the Women's Rights Movement and the Labor Rights Movement. Each of those endeavors are fueled by a 1960's-style agenda and promoted by 1960's-style propaganda.

And so far as Credence's point, the presidential election is nearly a year away which is far more than a lifetime in politics. So, by this time next Autumn, there is no telling what the polls will reflect.

And so far as "Christian groups working for things like 'Living Minimum wages, etc.,'" that is not their style. Most of those groups do not travel around handing needy people free fish so they can eat for one day. They travel around teaching needy people how to fish so they can feed themselves for the rest of their lives.

And, yes, I would much rather live in a country that is run by stone-cold, hardcore capitalists than one that is run by idealistic, pie-in-the-sky, socialistic-communistic liberals.
